April 9th - Castletour to Huntly

Before leaving Brechin to visit the castle, we went to the Pictavia, a visitor center with information about the Picts. It was quite small and more designed for children, but still... And the guy selling the tickets was extremly nice and helpful.

Edzell Castle

This castle was the earliest one we visited so far. The castle has once only consisted of a tower house which has been extended over the following years. Especially remarkable was the walled garden. The walls were decorated with stone carvings showing e.g. the virtues, all made after sketches from Duerer. This last information was provided to us by the nice ticket officer who was extremly happy to have found a art historician (my sis) from Germany to tell us everything he knew. Lovely.

Dunnottar Castle

Unfortunately, this castle perfectly located on a small island in the bay was closed. But still, the view was magnificient and we were quite unhappy to miss the opportunity to fully explore it. So we climbed up on the cliffs opposite to catch a glimpse on it. Imagine it on a sunny day...

Slains Castle

Old Slains castle, built around 1200, was destroyed and abandoned and some miles away a new castle was erected in the late 16th century. Its structure as seen today is mainly due to major reconstructions in the early 19th century; but because building costs were too high, the castle was sold in the beginning 20th century. Bram Stoker who once stayed in the castle was inspired by the building to write his version of Dracula. In October 2007 the site was fenced off in order to built holiday homes there.
However, we managed to climb over the fence and walked through the empty place. Some walls reminded us of an old factory building, the vault looked like a crypt; some towers were still accessible...

Tolquhon Castle

This magnificent castle is a nice example for a defending fortress. In order to get to the palas you need to pass first the outer court. On its far end you enter the north range of the castle with the great hall and the square tower. If you pass the east range and enter through the main gaite, you finally arrive at the main house. The castle is still in good shape and offers a beautiful view.
